March 7th marked the date of the 2010 AFBJJ South Australian State Championships. Each year the event has grown in size and quality since it’s inception in 2008. Our ISOHEALTH BJJ Team rolled up feeling pumped and positive and our medal tally did not disappoint. We had a number of great moments including:
- ISOHEALTH won 25 Gold Medals, 16 Silver Medals and 9 Bronze Medals. This makes ISOHEALTH the first (and thus far the only) team in the events history to exceed 20 Gold Medals
- ISOHEALTH became the first team to break the 200 point barrier in the Teams Championship Cup (we went on to win 280 points)
- ISOHEALTH won the Teams Championship Cup and became the first (and only thus far the only) team to place in the two for two consecutive years in the Teams Championship Cup
- We had our first ever junior competitors from ISOHEALTH (Aaron who won a Gold medal and Ryan who won a Silver Medal)
- We had our first ever female competitor (Jenna who won a Silver Medal)

We were all extremely pleased with the results of all our competitors and I can’t emphasise enough that EVERYONE in our team contributed to our fantastic success. What I mean is that even the ISOHEALTH team members who don’t compete still contribute hugely to our success because they are part of the terrific pool of training partners that help us all become better grapplers. It was an amazing day with us doubling (ie winning both the Gi and NoGi division) in many divisions. All of our team conducted themselves in a very sportsmanlike manner even when they ran into the odd tough call or hard knock. A number of our guys won every single one of their matches by submission and there were some truly spectacular highlights (there were so many that they kind of weren’t highlights, they became more like uhhh, “normalites”). Here’s but a few:
- Nick Warne with his string of 30 second match wins
- Crazy Lachy with the fastest submission of the day, a 10 second win to take the Gold Medal in the 73-79kg Adult Blue Belt NoGi final
- Little Lachy with the most technical match that I’ve just about ever seen in any competition. That match was one of his numerous wins in the Open Weight division and at a weight of only 77kg that’s pretty darn impressive
- Tritto taking out Gold in both the Adult Blue Belt Gi and NoGi dvisions with a total fight time of less than two minutes (yes he won with a lot of very fast submissions)
- Scott, Pete and Josh taking Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Adult Gi White Belt 79-85kg division (and it was Pete and Scott’s first ever competition)
- RayRay winning Gold in both his divisions and just for being RayRay
- Our awesome webmaster Josh winning a Gold Medal and almost killing his mate in the process when they faced off in one of their finals LOL!
- Jamie with 3 Gold Medals from 3 divisions (what a bummer he had to leave early for work and miss out on fighting his 4th division)
- Big Dan winning every single match by submission and not losing a single match all day across 3 divisions (that made 2 Gold for his weight classes and Bronze for Open Weight after he had to pull out of the open weight finals due to a scheduling conflict)
- I know I’ve missed many but there are too many to mention!
All in all it was an awesome day and everyone in the ISOHEALTH team can be extremely proud of how we performed. There is already an article on the event by Chris Gillies from the SA Martial Arts Newsletter and amongst other places it’s on Facebook so check it out here

I also think it’s extremely important we recognise the help of those ISOHEALTH’ers who volunteered on the day to work as event staff because it’s great to know our club steps up to help make the event possible. Thanks so much to Andrew “the voice” Copland, Matt N, Cam K, Shane, Ash, Ben B and Dale “don’t you dare be a gram over” Williams. I also want to thank my wonderful partner Sarah for her help on the day and my Mum (Barb) who helped ensure all of our guys were looking sharp with their gi’s all patched up. Oh, and a shout out to Jo T and Sarah for filming the presentation at the end of the day, great thinking as we will definitely want to keep that moment on film!
