How intense is the training in the Standup/Clinch class? Is it a class where everyone is there to knock each other out and slam each other into the floor or do people look after each other while they work hard?
An extensive amount of research has gone into all of our classes, courses and programs to deliver training that is as realistic as possible while being as safe as possible. While we do encourage our regular participants to pair up with each and push the intensity of their training we do not permit any of our members to train in a reckless manner.
We do train with contact but even our more experienced participants must keep their strikes at no more than approximately 75% impact (and this is only for those who want to work at that level). We do not allow full-contact striking where participants would be trying to literally hit each other as hard as possible.

It is definitely possible to develop a high level of skill and effectiveness without giving each other a headache or busted nose each training session. There are already plenty of gyms around for those who want to train at knockout levels of impact and that’s great for those who want that, at ISO Health however we are all about taking the functional skills of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and striking and teaching them in a manner that helps the average person develop excellent skills while still being able to go home in one piece and then go to work the next day!
If you are okay with playing a sport like basketball, netball or indoor soccer then you’ll find you’ll feel safe in our classes. |
What types of people train in ISO Health’s martial arts classes?
We have all types of people training at ISO Health!
We have people whose first ever step into martial arts has been when they step into ISO Health and we have people who are former martial arts instructors with years of experience.
| |
We have people who are just looking to get fit and healthy while enjoying a great hobby (a hobby that they find gets them very fit and is much more fun than spending hours on the treadmill or pumping weights) and we have people that have competed in martial arts competition. |
| |
We have salespeople, students, tradesman, medical professionals, security guards, police officers, florists and pretty much every other walk of life. |
The common traits that all of these people share are:
They like training in a high quality martial arts in an ego free environment
| |
They all have a great attitude (if they didn’t they would not be welcome in our classes) |
| |
They would rather be a student of reality than a maser of fantasy |
What is the “clinch”?
In self defence and or mixed martial arts fighting is commonly referred to as having 3 clear ranges. Those ranges are:
- Striking range: Where punches and kicks can be exchanged but neither person has any grip or hold of the other person
- Clinch range: Where one person has a hold of the other, this could be a grip on the opponents hand, neck, shirt, leg, hair, foot or any other body part/piece of clothing
- Ground range: This is obviously where one or both people are on the ground
You’ll find that the clinch range and ground range are by and large the most important ranges in self defence situations because these two ranges are where the majority of time is spent in a self defence situation. If you think of any physical altercations you’ve ever seen (ie on the news, in public etc) you’ll quickly realise that they almost always ended up in the clinch range and they often end up in the clinch very early on in the proceedings. It’s very, very rare that you’ll see people stand back “toe to toe” and exchange punches or kicks, usually one person grabs hold of the other within the first few seconds of the fight/attack and thus they have now entered the clinch range. It’s important to understand that a person is aggressive and wants to take the fight/attack to the clinch they will most likely succeed whether you want the fight to go there or not (it’s generally much harder to avoid the clinch than it is to initiate the clinch).
At ISO Health you’ll find our clinch work consists of learning how to:
- Enter the clinch range correctly
- Properly control your opponent/opponents once in the clinch range (thus allowing you to protect yourself from your opponents offence while maximising your own offensive options)
- Develop your own takedowns and takedown defence
- How to properly deliver and defend strikes while in the clinch
- How to escape from common holds such as headlocks, guillotines, bear hugs etc (don’t be confused by thinking we practice this material in the same unrealistic boring way that you may have experienced in your previous martial arts training, all of our training is challenging and realistic while keeping things as safe as possible and at the comfort level of each participant)
If you are interested in training our Standup/Clinch program and have a healthy attitude toward your training then we’d love to hear from you and help you get started. Drop in to watch a class or contact us on 8234 59 44 or email info@isohealth.com.au
