Reality-Based
Personal Protection
Reality-Based
Personal Protection (RBPP) is the self defence system developed by former
United States Federal Agent and 2006 Self Defence Instructor of the Year
Jim Wagner. Reality-Based
Personal Protection is very different from most martial arts and self
defence systems and some of these key differences include:
 |
Practical and
proven methods rather than fancy “Hollywood” techniques |
 |
Training in awareness and
avoidance (these are the things that really help keep you out of trouble) |
 |
Our training is performed
in “normal” clothing and shoes rather than a specific
martial arts style uniform |
 |
Our training is designed
to help us defend against the style of attacks used by criminals rather
than learning how to defend against stylized martial arts attacks.
Thugs and criminals aren’t likely to bow and then throw a high
kick to your head, they are more likely to ask you for the time and
then sucker punch you as you check your watch. Dealing with this type
of attack requires very different training from what is offered in
most martial arts and that is exactly what we deliver in Reality-Based
Personal Protection |
RBPP incorporates three
key factors which make it truly “Reality-Based”, those
factors are:
1.
Pre-Conflict Training
2. Conflict Training
3. Post-Conflict Training |
 |
| Pre-Conflict
Training: |
This area
of training covers topics like awareness, how to tell when you are
being followed, safety considerations for general daily life, target
hardening, pre-conflict verbal considerations, use of force issues
and more. This is actually the most important element of self defence
as the vast majority of dangerous situations can be avoided with
the right Pre-Conflict strategies and awareness.
|
| Conflict
Training: |
This is the physical side
of Reality-Based Personal Protection. A key part of what makes our
Conflict Training so effective is that wherever possible we base
our actions and responses on concepts and principles rather than
on “fight by the numbers” techniques. In a truly stressful
situation is almost impossible to use set techniques whereas concepts
and principles can certainly still work.
Rather than teaching you
a range of different responses to all the various ways you could
be attacked we teach you key principles which can deal with a wide
variety of attacks.
Our conflict training also
involves the important use of scenario training rather than standard
sparring to ensure the greatest possible transfer of your skills
to real life situations (this is a key part of helping people to
better cope with the emotional, mental and physical stress of a
real life self defence situation)
|
| Post-Conflict
Training: |
A self defence system should
help you with the events that follow a physical altercation. Your
training should include things like the need to apply a certain degree
of self-triage/first-aid. Training to actually exit the area of conflict
is also extremely important and this is something that should be reinforced
by your training (many systems finish a drill and then just stand
there without giving thought to fleeing from their attacker). |
 |
Training in Reality-Based
Personal Protection can be undertaken in course form and is available
in personal training, small groups, workshops/seminars and instructor
certification courses (click here for info on Instructor Certifcation
Courses in RBPP).
While RBPP is not available
in ISO Health’s regular class timetable (RBPP is taught in
a strictly planned course format) you’ll find that regular
classes are available in ISO-Health Reality-Based Protection (IHRBP)
which is strongly based on RBPP but is tailored for a regular class
environment.
