What classes are best for me if I want to lose weight?

All of the fitness, self defence and martial arts classes are great for providing a workout and burning some calories but the IHRBP Fitness are the most well tailored class for burning up a few extra pounds.

Do keep in mind though that if weight loss or body composition changes are your primary goal then your nutritional habits are something you will really need to address. Nutritional advice can be attained in a private consultation or in one of our workshops.

Can I attend any of the classes?

All of our classes provide scope for people of levels ranging from beginner to advanced. If you are in reasonable health then you’ll find all of our classes are quite suitable for almost anyone. I'm not very fit - can I still come to the classes?

Yes! Our classes are all designed so that people of all fitness levels can work together side by side. If you find a particular exercise (or drill) in one of our classes (fitness and or self defence) to be uncomfortable or problematic we will always provide an alternative option where possible or you can just opt out of that particular exercise without fear of judgement or ridicule.

Will I get injured if I train in the self defence classes or ground classes?

Our self defence and martial arts classes are designed to be as safe as possible while remaining as effective as possible. While injury can occur in any sport (from dancing to netball to swimming) Matt Jones has gone to great lengths to make ISO Health’s classes very safe. Training is challenging but the risk of injury is very low. Consider a few of the following points…

Nobody has to train any harder than they feel comfortable at all times when people are paired up the intensity of the exercise is adjusted for each individual

If you are a beginner you can opt for zero or very light contact. More advanced participants can choose to opt for their partner to put greater pressure on them during the drills/exercises
Sparring is never compulsory and is only available to those who have demonstrated a strong grasp of the methods and training attitude in place at ISO Health (ie if you don’t have good control you don’t ever get to spar or make contact in training)

What should I wear to the classes?

Appropriate attire for all classes consists of the following…

Shoes:

For IR-Fitness classes: Non-marking soft soled shoes (eg cross trainers, tennis shoes or basketball shoes)For Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and Standup/Clinch: Bare feet or socks

Shirt:

All participants in ISO Health’s Standup/Clinch classes must wear the ISO Health uniform requirement which is an ISO Health T-Shirt.

In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) classes you may wear a Gi or the ISO Health t-shirt For fitness classes a clean and neat t-shirt, polo shirt, singlet or long sleeved top are fine (the ISO Health T-shirt is not required in the fitness classes)

Shorts, Pants:

For self defence and or martial arts classes we recommend people wear comfortable long legged pants. Shorts are allowed but keep in mind that you’ll be moving around in all sorts of unusual ways and shorts don’t always provide well for one’s modesty

Gi:

For the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes you will eventually need your own gi.

The gi used for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a purpose built martial arts uniform which is much stronger than a regular Karate or Tae Kwon Do uniform (the reason being that it BJJ you will be deliberately grabbing your gi (and your partners) to aid in performing moves or controlling your opponent’s movement.

The gi also provides an extra level of hygiene which is appreciated as you are in close proximity to each other while grappling.

A Judo gi is also suitable and uniforms (gi’s) can be purchased from ISO Health, at martial arts stores or online.

Jewellery :

All jewellery must be removed during training. All piercings must be removed as must all rings, necklaces, watches, bracelets etc. This is important to prevent uneccessary injury and also to ensure your jeweleary doesn’t get snagged which could lead it being damaged.

Mouthguard:

All participants in self defence or martial arts classes must wear mouthguard. Don’t interperet this to mean that you are going to be training with heavy contact, it is simply a safety precaution which is part of our commitment to create the safest possible training environment.

Boxing Gloves:

You will eventually need your own boxing gloves if you become a regular participant in the Standup/Clinch classes.

The gloves need to be at least 10oz gloves and have an attached thumb. Some gloves sold in shops are fine for pad or cardio work but not suitable for use when participating in the Standup/Clinch classes.

Suitable boxing gloves can be purchased from ISO Health, from retail stores or online. We will happily provide advice on what to look for if you decide to purchase your own gloves but keep in mind that different brands have very different fits and thus it is subjective thing.

Try on gloves before you buy them or if ordering online at least make sure you’ve tried on that same model by borrowing a friends or the like.

I wear glasses - should I take them off to train?

Glasses will be fine for some exercises but will need to be taken off for other exercises. It is also important from a self defence perspective to deal without one’s glasses as defending yourself may not always give you the chance to be wearing your glasses. In the Standup/Clinch classes and the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes you’ll need to take off your classes while the Reality-Based classes will have times where you can get away with wearing your glasses.
