ISOHEALTH BJJ Number One at the 2010 AFBJJ-SA State Championships!

March 7th marked the date of the 2010 AFBJJ South Australian State Championships. Each year the event has grown in size and quality since it’s inception in 2008. Our ISOHEALTH BJJ Team rolled up feeling pumped and positive and our medal tally did not disappoint. We had a number of great moments including:

  • ISOHEALTH won 25 Gold Medals, 16 Silver Medals and 9 Bronze Medals. This makes ISOHEALTH the first (and thus far the only) team in the events history to exceed 20 Gold Medals
  • ISOHEALTH became the first team to break the 200 point barrier in the Teams Championship Cup (we went on to win 280 points)
  • ISOHEALTH won the Teams Championship Cup and became the first (and only thus far the only) team to place in the two for two consecutive years in the Teams Championship Cup
  • We had our first ever junior competitors from ISOHEALTH (Aaron who won a Gold medal and Ryan who won a Silver Medal)
  • We had our first ever female competitor (Jenna who won a Silver Medal)

Nick Warne on his way to back to back Gold Medals in both Gi and NoGi

We were all extremely pleased with the results of all our competitors and I can’t emphasise enough that EVERYONE in our team contributed to our fantastic success. What I mean is that even the ISOHEALTH team members who don’t compete still contribute hugely to our success because they are part of the terrific pool of training partners that help us all become better grapplers. It was an amazing day with us doubling (ie winning both the Gi and NoGi division) in many divisions. All of our team conducted themselves in a very sportsmanlike manner even when they ran into the odd tough call or hard knock. A number of our guys won every single one of their matches by submission and there were some truly spectacular highlights (there were so many that they kind of weren’t highlights, they became more like uhhh, “normalites”). Here’s but a few:

  • Nick Warne with his string of 30 second match wins
  • Crazy Lachy with the fastest submission of the day, a 10 second win to take the Gold Medal in the 73-79kg Adult Blue Belt NoGi final
  • Little Lachy with the most technical match that I’ve just about ever seen in any competition. That match was one of his numerous wins in the Open Weight division and at a weight of only 77kg that’s pretty darn impressive
  • Tritto taking out Gold in both the Adult Blue Belt Gi and NoGi dvisions with a total fight time of less than two minutes (yes he won with a lot of very fast submissions)
  • Scott, Pete and Josh taking Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Adult Gi White Belt 79-85kg division (and it was Pete and Scott’s first ever competition)
  • RayRay winning Gold in both his divisions and just for being RayRay
  • Our awesome webmasters Josh and Troy each winning Gold Medals and almost killing each other in the process when they faced off in one of their finals LOL!
  • Jamie with 3 Gold Medals from 3 divisions (what a bummer he had to leave early for work and miss out on fighting his 4th division)
  • Big Dan winning every single match by submission and not losing a single match all day across 3 divisions (that made 2 Gold for his weight classes and Bronze for Open Weight after he had to pull out of the open weight finals due to a scheduling conflict)
  • I know I’ve missed many but there are too many to mentio

All in all it was an awesome day and everyone in the ISOHEALTH team can be extremely proud of how we performed. There is already an article on the event by Chris Gillies from the SA Martial Arts Newsletter and amongst other places it’s on Facebook so check it out here

Ray Lawley-Sinclair refused to be out muscled in securing his second Gold Medal of the day

Gold, Silver, Bronze for Scott, Pete and Josh and another clean sweep of the medals for ISOHEALTH (and yes there were definitely some good competitors from other teams in their division)

I also think it’s extremely important we recognise the help of those ISOHEALTH’ers who volunteered on the day to work as event staff because it’s great to know our club steps up to help make the event possible. Thanks so much to Andrew “the voice” Copland, Matt N, Cam K, Shane, Ash, Ben B and Dale “don’t you dare be a gram over” Williams. I also want to thank my wonderful partner Sarah for her help on the day and my Mum (Barb) who helped ensure all of our guys were looking sharp with their gi’s all patched up. Oh, and a shout out to Jo T and Sarah for filming the presentation at the end of the day, great thinking as we will definitely want to keep that moment on film!

BJJ Australian Champions Cup 2009
Team ISOHEALTH has 4 Australian Champions

BJJ Australian Champions Cup 2009, Team ISOHEALTH has 4 Australian Champions

August 23rd marked a big day for Adelaide BJJ and ISOHEALTH as it was the first time the Australian Champions Cup for BJJ was ever held in Adelaide and it was the first time ISOHEALTH members had competed in an Australian Championship! The day went well, the matches were exciting and ISOHEALTH had some excellent results, not least of which was having 4 Australian Champions emerge from the event and with those 4 Gold Medal we also captured 6 Silver and 1 Bronze! This result on the back of ISOHEALTH's successes at the recent South Australian State Championships helps cement our place as arguably being one of Adelaide's (and South Australia's) leading BJJ clubs.

Only a small group from ISOHEALTH competed in the BJJ Australian Champions Cup but the great medal haul was as follows...

GOLD Lim, Mike Gi Weight Class
GOLD Jones, Craig NoGi Weight Class
GOLD Conway, Lachy NoGi Weight Class
GOLD Liddle, Dom Gi Weight Class

SILVER Lime, Mike NoGi Weight Class
SILVER Brown, Jamie Gi Weight Class
SILVER Brown, Jamie NoGi Weight Class
SILVER Semmens, Nae NoGi Weight Class
SILVER Semmens, Nae Gi Weight Class
SILVER Liddle, Dom NoGi Weight Class

BRONZE Conway, Lachy Gi Weight Class

Some of our fighters made their way to winning their Australian titles by taking every match by submission and all of them performed with great sportsmanship which is a given when representing the ISOHEALTH team.

Lachy receiving his Gold Medal and rightly happy about being an Australian Champion

We found a number of times where ISOHEALTH fighters came up against fighters from the same opposing teams in finals matches, namely we ran into the boys in red from Australian Elite Team a number of times and we found them to be a great bunch of guys with our two teams having a number of great back forth matches and flip flopping the results between gi and nogi (it's always great to meet some friendly interstate teams and have some exciting matches full of great sportsmanship).

We had a couple of unfortunate situations where some of our more experienced ISOHEALTH team members were unable to compete due to injury and that is a real shame but I'm sure we'll see more from those guys at the Pan-Pacs and of course next year at the South Australian Championships.

I must say that it was a really proud moment for me to see our humble ISOHEALTH team walk away with such great results. It's all the more special given that this was our club's first outing at the Australian Championships, combine that with the fact that we are still a self defence BJJ club as much as a competition one and it makes things all the more remarkable.

We look forward to more great competition outings but will always stay true to the notion of the self defence heritage of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

See you at the next comp,
Matt : )

ISOHEALTH fights up a storm at BJJ State Championships 2009

On Sunday June 28th the ISOHEALTH team rolled into ETSA Park stadium for the 2009 Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu South Australia (FBJJ-SA) State Championships! As one of the committee of the FBJJ-SA I’d been involved in the planning and setup of the event so I already knew how great the event was going to look, we had the new electronic scoreboards, a great mat area and the stands for the spectators provided a great area for fans, friends, teammates and family members to cheer on the competitors. The ISOHEALTH team stepped up in a major way supplying a huge number of volunteers to make sure scoring and time keeping were covered and I am really thankful to our team members who did step up and volunteer for those rolls because without you the event would have struggled badly. Andrew T, Andrew C, Ash, Ben B, Dale, Israel, Matt N. Thanks guys, you really stepped up! We supplied more than 3 times our quota of event staff and yet you all still worked tirelessly throughout the day to help pick up for the teams that were short on volunteers. Truly AWESOME, you guys are a great example of what sport and martial arts should be all about!

The event was a huge success in it’s own right and it was extremely good day for the ISOHEALTH team! Our team all represented themselves in a really good light with excellent sportsmanship even in the face of some situations where people may easily have shown frustration or anger our guys stayed cool and polite, but that’s the nature of the sport, things are going to happen in comps that stress you out but at the end of the day you want to know that you acted in a way that allows you to look yourself in the mirror and be proud of who you are. Anyhow, as for the actual performance on the mat our team performed brilliantly, we came away with 11 Gold medals, 11 Silver medals and 10 Bronze medals! We also finished

We came 2nd overall in the teams event which is awesome at anytime but especially so given that we've only been going for two and a half years and we started completely from scratch. We’re all super happy with our results as they are proof positive that even though we don’t focus on competition we can still put in a very strong competition team (we like to spend time on the self defence side of BJJ but the sport side is also great fun). We had no juvenile competitors either so once we add some kids training to our timetable it will increase our chances of taking that number 1 spot on the Team Cup!

Nick Warne celebrating the fastest submission of the day (13 seconds) after having already had his nose broken in a previous match

There were a bunch of great highlights from ISOHEALTH team members throughout the day but here are a snapshot of some of them…

  • Nick W was fighting up a weight class and sustained a broken nose in his opening match of the gi division, his nose was smashed and the claret flowed hard for a quite a while! Well anyhow, even with his nose smashed the awesome little dude still insisted on stepping up for the NoGi division and in his first round won by submission in just 13 seconds to achieve the fastest submission of the day!!! What a trooper!!!
  • Mikey Lim our 58kg dual gold medalist in gi and NoGi stepped up for the Open Weight No-Gi event and met a MONSTER of a bloke in the first round, this guy was well over 100kg and ripped to the bone! I started a chant “Mikey, clap clap clap, Mikey, clap clap clap” and the whole crowd (even people from other teams) got behind him to spur him on against this bloke who was easily one of the most massive dudes of the day. Mikey didn’t manage to win that match but the gold’s he already took in his weight class would have softened that blow LOL!
  • Crazy Lachy managed to go through the whole day fighting 3 divisions (gi weight, nogi weight and nogi open weight) without dropping a single point! Yes that’s right, he didn’t drop a point the whole day! He did end up having to forfeit his Open Weight match which left him with Bronze (he had to forfeit due to match scheduling clashing too tightly) but man what a great achievement! Lachy has only been training 12 months but you’d never know it from looking at his comp results!
  • Dom won 4 Gold medals from 4 divisions so he can be very pleased with himself, what more can I say?
  • We won medals in a huge range of divisions from the lightest of white belts to the heaviest of blue belts

Here are the actual medal results for our ISOHEALTH team for the FBJJ-SA State Championships for 2009, I lost my voice by the end of the day but man it was well worth it!!!

South Australia BJJ Titles
August 31 2008

Left to RIght: Matt J, Lachy C, Kieran V, Chris (from Pete DeBeen's, he hung with our team for the day), Wes P.

Congratulations to all those who participated and a big thanks to everyone who came along to support the guys competing.

Every participant fought really well and we saw a terrific display of both ground work and clinching. It was great to see everyone push the action with a lot of great takedowns, transitions and submissions.

Above all we were extremely proud to see everyone compete so intensely while displaying the highest level of sportsmanship.

We only had 7 guys enter but 4 of them came home with medals so that was truly awesome. The results were:

Silver:

Lachy C (67 - 73kg)

Silver:

Wes Powell (79 - 85kg)

Bronze:

Alan K (49 - 67kg)

Bronze:

Kieran V (85 - 91kg)

Gordon, Tristan and Andrew all fought really well but each one was only just edged out by their opponents. They fought great and we're really proud of all of them.

Gordon having his hand raised after winning his first match in Melbourne. Gordo won a couple more matches without dropping a single point but was dealt his first & only loss by his fellow ISOHEALTH team mate (Tristan) in the quarter final. All 3 of our lightweights finished in the final 8 out of 40 competitors. Great job guys!!! The rest of the results are to come...

We also want to thank all the people who came long to lend their support to our guys, it was an awesome turn out with about 20 people there supporting our Team ISOHEALTH competitors so once again THANK YOU!!!

San Shou
September 5 2008

South Australia held its first San Shou event recently in Adelaide.

One of our guys, Dom Liddle, fought in the event supported by crew from ISOHEALTH - his coach Matt Jones and his two cornermen Nathan Maddigan and Nae Semmans. The fight night was good, Dom fought really well and the result was actually a draw which was an accurate reflection of the intensity of his bout! Our boy Dom' fight was the co-main event but the undercard was still a terrrifc series of matches too! The draw was a fair decision so we were all very happy with the way the night went.

The hardest thing was that we'd been training Dom for an MMA/San Shou style stand-up fight which with rules allowing takedowns, knees to the body and head and lots of clinching but less than 24 hrs before the fight we were told it would be changed to straight international kickboxing rules which mean't he was only allowed to punch and kick thus half his game (ie takedowns and clinch) was now thrown out. Inspite of the weird turn of events he still did great and to draw with his opponent who was a kickboxing specialist.

Well done Dom!
