Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a very unique
martial art and one of the most amazing things about BJJ is that
it is both extremely effective and also a lot of fun! Furthermore,
the unique training methodology of ISO Health’s Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu sessions help our clients to become very capable martial
artists in a safe and encouraging environment.
:: What is BJJ? ::
In 1992 Royce Gracie shocked the martial
arts world at the UFC by beating opponents who were stronger and
outweighed him by over 50 pounds by using BJJ. This was a turning
point for BJJ and put the sport into the martial arts spotlight
making it one of the most popular martial arts.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that
focuses on grappling/ground fighting focusing on submissions without
the use of strikes while training allows students to practice at
full speed and with full power resembling the effort used in a real
competition.

BJJ allows students to defeat an opponent
of greater size and strength using submissions.
:: Why should I do BJJ?
::
Health Benefits:
- improved fitness and cardiovascular health
- improved flexibility
- greater strength
- improved resilience
- improved ability to get up back to your
feet from the ground
Other Benefits:
- self defence
- it’s a lot of fun!
None us of us want to or expect that we will
get into a fight, however we do live in a dangerous and unpredictable
world so it can and does happen. A lot of real fights end up on
the ground or in a clinch so it is definitely worth learning to
fight in those situations.
:: Can anyone do it? ::
They sure can! The level of resistance you
use is up to you and your training partner so anyone can do it.
BJJ is great for men and women. BJJ allows students to defeat an
opponent of greater size and strength using submissions so it is
great for smaller people.
More importantly, BJJ is fantastic for learning
how to control a fight from a positional standpoint (and controlling
a fight from a positional standpoint allows you to then apply any
number of tactics such as fleeing, striking, gouging etc). As such
BJJ forms a terrific platform for almost any form of self defence
tactic.
:: What are the classes
like? ::
Our classes begin with a warm up and then
move into the next section of the class where the instructor teaches
the techniques relevant for that session (in many cases this phase
of the class will be tailored to the various levels of the participants
so that beginners can get what they need and so to can the more
experienced participants).
Techniques are practiced first in a compliant
manner and then under progressive resistance until move into working
at full resistance for those who are ready to do so.
The class then finishes with a free
rolling/sparring session. The level of resistance used is up to
the student so all students can train safely and within their limits
at all times.
